Executive Office Fitout
Interior Design of Executive Office
Project Type: Office Fitout
Project Phase: Issued for Tender/Costing
The Starting Point
The Paradigm Room were engaged to design an executive office, within a larger commercial tenancy of one of Toowoomba City’s earliest buildings. The brief included:
Storage joinery to incorporate some drawers, closed cupboards, and open bookshelves;
Cabinetry to flow through to the desk, to allow additional storage and provision for printer;
Design and detailing of wall surfaces, e.g. wallpaper, wainscoting;
Investigate and specify future options for the desk, armchairs and sofa;
Overall design to be timeless, monochromatic, traditional;
Retain existing artwork, traditional cabinet and potentially robe cupboard.

The Design
The new design of the office fitout complimented our client’s personal style preferences, in conjunction with the existing building. We also drew inspiration from the history of the building and surrounding landscape.
The space planning incorporated a large executive desk with a mass of storage behind for books and A4 folders. This was maximised with a floor to ceiling library-style bookshelf, consisting of drawers and closed cupboards below bench height (ease of cleaning), open shelves above to suit the binders, a display shelf for our client’s sentimental didgeridoo, and a sliding ladder for easy access to the upper shelves.
The bespoke timber desk then wrapped around, using traditional detailing, and incorporating further storage.
Wainscoting, a decorative wall paneling approach, then wrapped the lower portion of all 5 walls to the office (one corner was slightly chamfered to create a 5 wall).

A classic, yet contemporary, interior design aesthetic
The final interior design displayed cohesive detailing, aligning every element meticulously. Warm timber tones reflected the broader existing tenancy, while also drawing inspiration from the boardroom table constructed from solid Queensland-sourced timber. A monochromatic colour scheme enhanced the classic nature, and complimented the client’s style. The texture offered warmth and comfort, through woolen fabrics and leather, and the wainscoting, alongside further masculine through the carpet planks and textured brass hardware.
Wherever possible, we sought to specify local materials that were both sustainable and healthy.

Additional elements within the design included:
Traditional FSC timber mouldings to the skirting, cornice and wainscoting trims
Antique texture brass cabinetry hardware, which also complimented the client’s existing artwork
A designated space to display a sentimental didgeridoo
Chesterfield-style armchairs and sofa, with the flexibility to place the armchairs at the front of the desk, and also swivel them around to the sofa behind for larger meetings
New shutters were proposed to the internal of two windows to control glare against the desk. Though these were specified as sustainable basswood timber, rather than the more common (and often harmful) PVC alternatives
Paint finishes were nominated to be ultra low VOC and GREENGUARD Gold certified
